Super 6A

Pioneers no match for powerful Trojans

Roger Moore - NewsPress

JENKS Commit the crime, do the time.

Stillwater High’s crime was finishing fourth in 6A-3. The punishment was a trip to Jenks, the defending state champion, and a program that, along with Tulsa Union, seems to be in the stratosphere when it comes to Oklahoma high school football.

Before the first quarter was through, the Trojans, who will face Westmoore in the quarterfinals next week, led 28-0. By the time the Hunter-Dwelley Stadium clock expired, it showed the No. 2 Trojans with a 42-7 victory.

No. 1 Union, which gave Jenks its only loss of 2007, opened its postseason with a 41-7 win against Booker T. Washington at Union-Tuttle Stadium.

JHS senior quarterback Mark Ginther completed 12-of-18 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown. Senior tailback Chris Adkins needed just 11 carries to pick up 117 yards and score four TDs.

Tramaine Thompson, a junior receiver, caught seven passes for 97 yards.

None of them played in the second half as Jenks opened the final 24 minutes with a 42-0 lead.

The Pioneers avoided the shutout with a 10-play, 86-yard drive in the fourth quarter, getting a Lane White 15-yard TD pass to Grant Field.

Field caught his first pass with 3:10 to play in the third quarter and finished with four grabs for 59 yards to end his career with 102 receptions — third in school history — and 1,630 yards — fifth all-time.

Chris Perry moved into sixth all-time at SHS in rushing with a 107-yard night. The junior finishes the season with 770 yards and will take 1,870 career yards into his senior campaign.

Rick Fagan totaled 1,862 yards in 1972 and ’73.

As far as good news, that was it as Jenks defenders were in White’s face all night. The senior connected on just 8-of-35 for 93 yards after going 3-of-20 for 25 yards with two interceptions in the first half.

JHS took a 7-0 lead on Adkins’ 11-yard run with 9:42 to play in the first quarter.

A three-and-out and a 38-yard Pioneer punt gave the hosts the ball at the SHS 48-yard line for its next possession. Earl Sparrow forced an Adkins fumble at the SHS 18-yard line, but the Pioneers would gain two yards on three plays and punt.

A 22-yard completion to Dallas Beeler and a 21-yard run by Adkins led to the Trojans’ second score, a 12-yard TD pass from Ginther to Thompson with 2:22 left in the opening quarter.

Nose tackle Tony Gillespie intercepted an ill-advised White pass a series later and Adkins’ 7-yard TD run made it 21-0.

The Pioneers went backward on their next series, and Justin Ebert, pressured on a punt, tossed an incompletion and JHS took over at the Pioneer 9-yard line. Adkins’ third TD made it 28-0 with :39 to play in the first quarter.

The opening 12 minutes ended with the Trojans holding a 189-3 advantage in total yardage.

Perry bolted 35 yards on SHS’s next series for the visitors’ best penetration of the night, but a fake punt attempt failed and JHS took over on downs at its 32-yard line. Four plays later it was 35-0 when Adkins danced and dodged his way 28 yards for a score.

The final nail in the coffin came when Jared Cunningham caught a pass for seven yards, but fumbled. Earnest Colbert scooped up the ball and raced 36 yards to the Pioneer 2-yard line. A play later it was 42-0, and thanks to JHS head coach Alan Trimble, who played mostly backups in the second half, it didn’t get completely ridiculous down the stretch.

Stillwater finishes 6-5 with three straight losses to end the season. One of those losses came on the opening week of district play, a 21-14 setback at Edmond North, who finished third in 6A-3.

The Huskies lost a 6-point game at Muskogee on Friday night.
