P-T defeats Cushing in Highway 33 battle
PERKINS — Perkins-Tryon can claim superiority in the Battle of Highway 33 again.
The Demons picked up their first win of the season by topping Cushing, 29-14, in the rivalry contest Friday night at McIlvain Field.
P-T (1-2) raced to a 17-0 lead by the midpoint of the second quarter. Lance Spence had a 1-yard touchdown run with 9:23 on the clock in the first and Matt Hill added an 11-yarder with 5:14 showing. Dakota Turner nailed a 36-yard field goal with 7:10 left until halftime.
Cushing (1-2) got on the board with a 46-yard run by Martinez McKinney with 1:22 on the clock. He finished the game with 181 yards on 26 carries.
The Tigers cut their deficit to 17-14 when Garrett Evans scored on a 1-yard run with 7:37 remaining in the third.
P-T responded with a 65-yard TD run by Ryan Dolen with 7:16 on the clock. He ran for 139 yards on seven carries.
The Demons finished the scoring with a 35-yard run by Matt Hill with 6:45 left in the fourth. He carried 16 times for 110 yards and a pair of scores.
P-T visits Blackwell next week, while Cushing hosts Tecumseh. Blackwell lost to 2A No. 6 Kingfisher, 23-0, while THS fell to Harrah, 37-0, on Friday.
Tonkawa 42, Pawnee 16
PAWNEE — Class A No. 5 Tonkawa improved to 3-0 with a 42-16 win at No. 11 Pawnee on Friday.
The Bucanneers led 22-0 at halftime and 29-0 when sophomore Jake Love socred on a 47-yard run early in the third quarter. Love rushed for 180 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries. Former Black Bear quarterback Colby Ellis rushed for 94 yards on 17 carries as Tonkawa totaled 294 on the ground.
Ellis is the son of former PHS coach David Ellis, who returned to his alma mater to be an assistant this season.
Pawnee got on the scoreboard on a 67-yard touchdown run from Tate Beer with two minutes to play in the third. The Black Bears also had a 41-yard touchdown pass from Beer to Marlin Miller.
PHS managed just nine first downs and 207 yards of offense.
Colby Ellis had a 60-yard interception return score on the final play of the game.
Pawnee drops to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in a rugged A-7 race.

• Class A No. 4 Morrison ran its winning streak to 42 games, including a perfect 3-0 in 11-man football, with a 50-6 drubbing of Liberty on Friday.
The Wildcats visit No. 2 Hominy next Friday night.
• Class 2A Perry shut out Caney Valley, 31-0, to improve to 1-2. PHS hosts Fairview next week. FHS lost to Watonga, 34-13, on Friday.
• George Weve won his first game as Agra head coach when his Class B Bearcats routed Oklahoma Christian Academy, 60-12, on the road. AHS (1-2) hosts Kiefer next week.
