SHS volleyball wins silver bracket
TULSA — Stillwater High’s fourth-ranked volleyball team earned top honors in the silver bracket at the Tulsa Union Tournament on Saturday.
The Lady Pioneers started the day by beating Norman to advance to the silver finals. They went on to defeat Edmond North, 26-24, 20-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-10, for the crown.
SHS fell into the silver bracket after losing, 19-25, 17-25, 25-20, 31-29, 13-15, to Union — which went on to claim the Gold championship — in Friday’s pool play.
“I know this — I would rather go to a tournament like this and lose every game than go somewhere and beat the crap out of somebody,” said SHS coach Ryan Webber. “I think we made some great strides and we accomplished some good things.”
Sarah Groesbeck led the Lady Pioneers this weekend with a combined 59 kills, Anna Gentry added 45 and Regan Sirbaugh contributed 34. Gentry also recorded six aces, Mary O’Neil had 53 digs and Amy Kangas posted 106 assists.
SHS hosts Union on Tuesday and Class 4A’s top-ranked Heritage Hall on Thursday.
Also in action Saturday was Stillwater’s eighth-grade “A” team, which won the Jenks Tournament. The ninth-grade squad took second overall at Jenks.
