Golf tournament spots on the line

A pair of former city champions, Rex Hughes and Terry Faggins, plus Mark Littlefield held or shared leads at their respective golf courses after the first day of play to see who can win spots in the 10th Annual Stillwater NewsPress City Championships to be held next month.

Faggins and Dale Bays, both playing at Lakeside golf course, posted the only sub-par rounds, each posting 69, for the best scores of the day. Mark Littlefield’s 73 was the best at Cimarron Trails, two shots better than second place Lynn Gann (75).

While Lakeside and Cimarron Trails are using 36-hole scores to determine medal champions the Stillwater Country Club, playing 27 holes each day, requires 54-hole scores to win its tournament.

At the half-way mark at the Country Club, Hughes’ 103 is seven shots better than second-place Dave Reynolds (110) and eight shots ahead of Terry Carpenter (111) and Tim Crockett (111).

Inasmuch as Hughes, winner of the SCC match play title and a qualifier for the NewsPress affair, the Country Club’s runner-up will receive the bid of Hughes successfully defends his title.
