Favre deserves to play for any team he wants

Sean Hubbard - NewsPress

From 1968-91, this NFL team could only manage to put together five winning seasons.

During that 24-year span, this team with great historical success made the playoffs only twice. Many coaches were shuffled through trying to figure out the problem. Bad draft choices were made and nothing was getting done to get back to the ways of the good ol’ days.

It seemed there was no answer to the problem, until ’92, when a certain acquisition was made.

The team — Green Bay Packers. The acquisition, and the answer to all the problems — Brett Favre.

Favre was picked up by the Packers in ’92 after being selected in the second round of the 1991 NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons. Favre got his shot early in Green Bay as he stepped in for quarterback Don Majkowski and led the Packers to a comeback win in the first game of the season.

And, the rest is history.

Favre has done nothing but win in Green Bay. The guy is a winner. He turned a struggling franchise into a team that consistently goes to the playoffs and even went to back-to-back Super Bowls.

Aside from winning Super Bowl XXXI and tallying nine Pro Bowl selections, three consecutive NFL MVP awards (1996-1997), holding several NFL records and being named to the NFL 1990’s All-Decade Team, he really hasn’t done that much for the dynasty in Green Bay.

Now, after retiring from football in March of this year, apparently Favre has changed his mind and wants to continue playing. The team that he has led since 1992 wants to play hardball with him.

Are you serious?

The guy changed his mind. He still wants to play football. He wants to play bad enough that he has asked for his release from Green Bay, as they say they have committed to his backup, Aaron Rodgers.

Of course, the Pack won’t release the man who put excitement back on the frozen tundra, but if he asks for reinstatement, he is welcome to come back and hold a clipboard, wear a baseball cap and stand on the sidelines. Really?

Brett Favre should be able to do whatever he wants. If he wants to be a Packer, let him be a Packer. If he wants to be released — release him. The Packers organization owes Brett Favre a lot more than a spot on the end of the bench and a paycheck.

However, saying that, the management would feel pretty stupid if a release were to be granted and Favre led another team into the postseason. There is no way the Packers would allow for him to play in the NFC, because they don’t want to play him.

Only time will tell how the Favre saga will end. The administration should ask themselves if they really think Rodgers will lead this team further than Favre would.

And besides, how strange will it look to not see No. 4 taking the snaps in Wisconsin? That’s just not right.
