Jersey gives Oklahomans only loss
• Hosts finish 5-1 in pool competition
OKLAHOMA CITY — New Jersey had a little too much firepower for Oklahoma to overcome on Saturday during the second day of freestyle at the 2007 Junior Dual National Championships.
Oklahoma trailed 20-18 after El Reno’s Chris Hacker beat the nation’s top-rated 130-pounder, Kellen Russell of Blair Academy, at 145 pounds. But Mario Mason, another Blair product ranked No. 1, beat Catoosa’s Dallas Bailey at 152; No. 2 Scott Winston beat Union’s Joey Sheridan at 160; Corey Peltier knocked off Stillwater’s Chris Perry at 171; and Jonathan Becker beat El Reno’s Derek Thompson at 189 to put Jersey up 32-21 with two bouts remaining.
Perry’s Ladd Rupp had a technical fall at 105, while Stillwater product Ky Corley beat John Trumbetti at 130.
The 35-25 loss was Oklahoma’s first in pool competition after beating Virginia and Pennsylvania to open the tournament which began Friday.
In the 49-15 win over Virginia, Rupp, Union’s Jamal Parks, Hacker, MacArthur’s Chris McNeil and Weatherford’s Tyson Yoder all had technical falls. Bailey scored a fall.
Perry edged George Shappard 2-1, 3-0 in the 171-pound bout. Corley lost the first period, but rallied to beat David Yost at 130.
In Oklahoma’s 37-27 win over Pennsylvania, Perry picked up a 4-1, 6-0 decision over Lee Newcomer at 171 pounds. Oklahoma State recruits Parks and McNeil each won bouts, McNeil scoring a fall. Corley dropped a decision to Dylan Alton (3-5, 5-0, 6-0).
After the loss to unbeaten New Jersey, Oklahoma responded with dual wins over Connecticut, Delaware and Louisiana to finish 5-1 in pool competition.
Bailey knocked off Delaware’s Alex Meade, one of the top-rated 145-pounders in the country.
Wrestling continues today at the Wellness Center on the campus of Oklahoma City University.
Oklahoma faces Iowa, Kansas and Missouri in today’s afternoon session. New Jersey is on the same side of the bracket as defending champion Illinois.
The medal matches are scheduled for 6:30 tonight.
