Local authors write what they know
• Book signing set for Dec. 16 in Stillwater

Two local women have found a special niche in their life by writing and both will be signing their books at the Christian Bookstore on Dec. 16.
Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year and Lori Z. Scott, a former elementary teacher and local Stillwater writer, knows the meaning of the word “busy.”
Like many mothers, she not only works part-time, but volunteers at her children’s school and chauffeurs her children to church, swimming, soccer and music lessons.
“Mothers with school-aged children are pulled in so many different directions these days. But we’re still only allotted 24 hours a day to get it all done,” said Scott. “I wrote ‘Busy Moms’ Devotions to Go’ because I wanted to provide short spiritual insights for mothers like me. It’s small enough to fit into a purse and carry anywhere. My editor calls it spiritual fast food for women on the go.”
In addition to writing devotions and short stories for children, teens and mothers, Scott has contributed to a dozen books, including “Real Moms” and “Cup of Comfort Devotional for Women.”
Scott’s new book encourages active mothers to maintain an intimate relationship with God. Each of the 30 days worth of devotions includes a Scripture verse, meditation, prayer and fun activity.
Another local author, Jewel Sample, offers a message of hope for grieving families this Christmas season with her children’s book, “Flying Hugs and Kisses.” Sample and her husband have three sons and 13 grandchildren.
After one grandchild died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Sample wrote the book for her grandchildren and then decided other families may need support and encouragement while moving forward in the midst of their loss.
Sample’s book is about five children who creatively take on roles of support toward each other while showing their individual feelings about the death of their baby brother. It has been selected as a children’s bereavement resource by the National SIDS/Infant Death Resource Center.
In addition to working on the translation of her book into Spanish, Sample is creating a coloring book to use along with the book.
“Eventually, I would like to write a children’s book with humor,” she said.
The two women will be signing their book Dec. 16 from 1-3 p.m. at the Christian Bookstore, 104 S. Perkins Road.
