OSU Emeriti talk about Children’s Museum over dinner

The OSU Emeriti Association learned about plans for the Stillwater Children’s Museum at their First Friday Dinner on October 6. Museum board member Kandi Spear and executive director Ruth Cavins shared the spotlight as they described the goals of the museum.

Although the Children’s Museum doesn’t have a permanent home yet, it already has an active program called Museum Without Walls. The speakers asked the OSU retirees for their help with the program, noting that this was an oppotunity for them to share their knowledge with Stillwater’s schoolchildren.

The Museum Without Walls program has already begun in Stillwater schools. Cavins said the principal educational focus is on the natural sciences, with one subject called “Smart Start to Science Literacy” and another called “Plant Virus Exploration.” In April the museum will take “A Jouney Back in Time” to pioneer life.

In other Emeriti business, Cara Beer announced that Ruth Ann Sirbaugh will begin her duties as director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at OSU on Nov. 1. Jack Stout said travel plans for the Emeriti include a trip to the Washington Irving Trail Museum southeast of Stillwater on October 11 and a trip to Branson, Missouri, on November 14 -16.

The children of OSU Emeriti member Ted Agnew invited all Emeriti members to a celebration of his 90th birthday on Nov. 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Family Life Center of the First United Methodist Church, at 7th and Duck Street. No gifts are requested.
