Library expands services

The Stillwater Public Library is in the process of expanding its outreach delivery program this fall to include adult nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

“Not only are we expanding where we can deliver, we are also expanding the number of items in our outreach collection,” said Librarian Carla Hickey. These are books and materials that are used exclusively for outreach deliveries.

Previously, the library’s Outreach Services included area daycare centers and preschools and residents participating in Project Heart and Mobile Meals as well as some individual homebound persons.

Last year, the Stillwater Public Library Trust Board received a $15,980 grant from the Buel J. Staton Charitable Trust to purchase a van to expand the Stillwater Public Library’s free outreach services.

According to Library Trust Board Member Larry Lundholm, “It is exciting to me to have a program like the outreach program made available to the Stillwater community. I think it is a wonderful thing to bring access to reading to those among us that are not able to travel to the library. I also consider it a credit to the wisdom, foresight, generosity and community service spirit of the late Buel Staton that a program such as this is being made possible.”

This fall, Lisa Vick, library employee, will begin delivering materials to the daycare centers and preschools.

Hickey said, “Lisa previously worked for the YMCA in before-and-after school care, and we welcome her experience in selecting reading materials for children.”

How the Outreach Services works:

• Stillwater Public Library (SPL) will deliver deposit collections September-April, and pick up the April collection in May.

• Each facility and SPL will sign a letter of agreement at the beginning of each delivery year (September).

• Each month SPL will deliver a container with 20 library items to designated facilities. The majority of the materials delivered will be books, but other formats, if desired, can also be included in the deposit collections. Other formats SPL has available are CD-music, CD-books, CD ROMs, videos and DVDs.

• Items will be checked out to the facility for one month.

• No fines will be assessed to facilities for overdue items. If an item is not returned to the library in three months, the facility will be assessed the cost of the item, and will have thirty (30) days to pay the charges.

• If the weather is inclement, SPL will reschedule deliveries and pick ups with the facility.
