Senior Activities Center stays busy

Upcoming events this week at the center include a short course on e-mails, exercise classes and afternoon games. E-mail classes start on Tuesday and exercise and games will be held daily. The Tuesday movie “Fools Gold,” begins at 5:30 p.m. and Thursday evening musicians will play and sing country and western tunes. We have a sign up sheet for any seniors interested in buying discounted tickets for their families to an Oklahoma State University football game. For more information on classes and activities or to pick up an August calendar, call 747-8080 or stop by 1015 E. 12th.

Wednesday morning, participants could be found smacking pool balls around on the billiards tables while others were learning more about computers. In the afternoon, seniors played rounds of canasta, dominoes and snooker. The afternoon computer students studied diligently as their instructor guided them through various tasks. Yoga practice was a quiet session of full range of motion asanas and sitting meditation.

Sit n’ fitters met Thursday morning for a slow and steady workout to loosen the muscles and increase metabolism. Line dancers could be found energizing their bodies as they followed two stepping tunes from the good old days. The afternoon folks filled the center as they gathered around tables for games of pool, dominoes, canasta, bridge and bingo. The evening brought participants from all over to play their instruments and sing out as others listened to their joyful tunes.

Friday morning, the billiards tables were busy as a group of ladies practiced to improve their shots. Crafters were also using their skills in painting and sewing. The birthday luncheon was a big hit as seniors gathered to celebrate August birthdays which was followed by an afternoon of dominoes, canasta and pitch. Daniel Devers, computer instructor, continued to help class participants expand their minds and learn more about the computer.

Monday morning activities included rounds of billiards, oil painting, China painting and computer lessons. The fun and games continued on into the afternoon as more participants showed up for rounds of bridge, canasta and dominoes. Computer students arrived eager to learn more about programs and the Internet. The winners of Social Bridge were reported as June Cramer, first and a tie between Paul Gilbert and Ernie Fitch for second.

Sit n’ fit class was full as seniors continue to strive for healthy and youthful lifestyles. Line dancers boot scooted their way to fitness. In the afternoon, voices rang out as participants gathered for camaraderie and games of pool, snooker, puzzles, dominoes and canasta. Winners reported for Duplicate Bridge were Patricia Logan/ Don Lorett, first, Betsy Baldwin/ Teresa Tanner, second, and Joan/ Bernie Roesler, third. In the evening, movie enthusiasts enjoyed watching “Over Her Dead Body.”

Life Center Participants Maxyne Lebow, Bonnie Mooneyham and Cathy Miller examine different varieties of watermelon to make sure they are ripe before serving them at the annual Life Center Watermelon Festival. Nutrition Coordinator Melissa Kennedy visits the watermelon festival at Rush Springs annually and brings back several varieties of melon for the participants to taste and compare. This year, some of the varieties served included big striper, royal sweet, Sahara gold, tender sweet (red and yellow), 800, desert king, mason red and black diamond. During the activity, participants learned how to test the melon to make sure it is ripe, various facts about the watermelon and its place in history. Participants then tasted and rated each melon by flavor, sweetness, color and texture. Of the seven varieties tasted, this year’s winner was the red striper.
