July brings new activities to the center

The month of July is fast approaching with new activities on tap for the center. The AARP driving class is set for July 8. The center will be closed July 4th. The Tuesday movie “Dan in Real Life” begins at 5:30 p.m. For more information on classes and activities or to pick up a July calendar, call 747-8080 or stop by 1015 E. 12th.

Lady’s pool started off Wednesday morning as participants teamed up for competitive rounds of billiards. Ceramics class painted on a cougar and jewelry boxes. Seniors gathered around the tables in the afternoon for rounds of dominoes, canasta and pool. Computer students learned how to do upload and download data.

Yoga practice was an invigorating session of asanas to enhance range of motion and improve stamina. Practice included asanas to open the hip and shoulder joints and sitting meditation.

Thursday morning, sit n’ fitters stretched arm and leg muscles with various routines focusing on strength and limberness. Line dancing practice included a toe tapping routine as participants kept up with the beat of the music. Folks joined friends at the center in the afternoon to play dominoes, canasta, pool, bridge and bingo. In the evening, musicians played their instruments while vocalists sang out joyfully to the crowd.

Lady pool players could be found smacking the balls into the pockets of the billiards tables Friday morning while crafters met to work on various pieces of art and share their ideas with one another. The afternoon participants found enjoyment in light-hearted rounds of dominoes, pitch and canasta. Computer students met for their first lesson on cleaning the hard drive of their personal computers.

Monday morning, the lady pool players started their week off with rounds of 8-ball while China and oil painters brushed intricate details on their delicate pieces of art. In the afternoon hours, sounds of cards shuffling and dominoes clanking filled the center as folks enjoyed rounds of dominoes and canasta. Computer class participants learned how to use the defragmenter on their computers.

The winners of Social Bridge were reported as Edith Flaming, first and JW Thomas, second. Yoga practice focused on restorative asanas and tension release. Practice included sitting meditation.

Sit n’ Fitters followed a routine Tuesday morning that focused on posture and breathing techniques as well as strengthening their abdominal muscles.

Line dancing practice continues to be a popular event amongst participants at the center as it is a unique way to exercise and stay in shape.

The afternoon folks filled the center as they gathered to play dominoes, canasta, pitch and pool. Duplicate bridge winners were …Butch/ Carolyn Hiatt, first; Betty Abenante/ Murna Raff, second and M. Hadi/ Robert Gholson, third. In the evening, movie enthusiasts enjoyed watching “August Rush.” Tuesday evening, line dancers could be found boot scooting their way to fitness as they stomped to the beat of the music.
