Senior News 04-27-08

City of Stillwater‘s Senior Activities Center is looking forward to May’s hectic schedule filled with driving classes, Special Olympics volunteering jewelry making classes and trips. The May activities calendar will be ready mid week. On Tuesday, the movie is “Charlie Wilson’s War” at 5:30 p.m. For more info, call 747-8080 or stop by 1015 E. 12.

Wednesday morning’s group of lady pool players had a joyful time as they showed their skills in rounds of 8-ball. The ceramics class painted turtles and frogs in preparation for spring time decorations. Puzzles, dominoes and canasta were popular game choices for the afternoon as folks gathered for light hearted games and socializing. Computer classes learned how to navigate the desktop and its various programs. Sign language covered more vocabulary words and played finger spelling games. Yoga practice was a deep quiet session for energy restoration and reinvigoration of the body. Practice also included sitting meditation.

Sit n’ Fitters energized their bodies with slow and steady movements to prepare for the rest of the day. Line dance practice is a popular form of exercise at the center as participants find it fun and rejuvenating. The seniors were busy enjoying an afternoon of canasta, dominoes, bridge and bingo while they laughed and shared stories with one another. In the evening, musicians played joyful tunes while listeners tapped their toes to the beat.

Friday morning was busy at the center as more ladies continue to show up to learn and improve their billiards skills. Crafters shared Friday morning with friends as they worked on finishing projects and getting ideas for new ones. The afternoon folks kept the cards shuffling and the bone pile stirred as they played several rounds of canasta and dominoes. Computer students learned how to minimize, restore and maximize windows.

Saturday participants enjoyed an afternoon of pool, puzzles, reading and Texas Hold’em. The winner of Texas Hold’em was Bud Moats.

Lady pool players practiced smacking the balls into the pockets Monday morning and oil painters continue to brush intricate details on attractive pieces of art. Seniors gathered for an afternoon of dominoes and canasta. Computer classes discovered how to copy and paste various files and folders. Winners of social bridge were Wally Reynolds and Jerry Koelsch tied for 1st, and Mallory Owen, 2nd. Sign language students participated in a silent dinner with other students and hearing impaired individuals. Yoga practice flowed thru a series of asanas to lengthen the spine and open the hips and shoulders. Practice included sitting meditation.

Tuesday morning Sit n’ Fitters created synergy throughout their bodies with robust exercises to strengthen their limbs. Line dancers energized their bodies while keeping a steady rhythm as the music played. The afternoon found seniors sitting around game tables to play canasta, pool and dominoes while others worked on finding more puzzle pieces that fit together. Duplicate bridge winners were Betty Abenante/Murna Raff, 1st; Terry Miller/Camille Johnston, 2nd and Betsy Baldwin/Jerry Koelsch, 3rd. In the evening, movie goers enjoyed watching “Becoming Jane.”
