HOWDY ’NEERS

• Stillwater High School opens a new year with a full week of fun

Rick Hoover - NewsPress

Say “Howdy!” to Howdy Week.

Monday marks the beginning of the first full week of school for Stillwater High students. It also marks the start of Howdy Week, a two-decade tradition of welcoming the school year.

“The goal of Howdy Week is to get the students to intermingle with each other and to get excited about being back in school,” Tommie Grant, SHS student council sponsor, said in an e-mail interview. “Basically, it’s for fun.”

Helping make it fun is all activities are for SHS students only, said Grant, who is in her second year as sponsor and as a mathematics teacher at SHS. She has taught nine years in Oklahoma.

SHS student council officers are: Heather Storm, president; Ayah Abu-Basha, vice president; Diane Chen, secretary; Su Hong, treasurer; Kelli Schlais, parliamentarian; and Babak Khoshroo, reporter.

Howdy Week is just the beginning for the officers, Grant said. During the year, the Student Council also will work on Semi-Formal, hosting local student councils in a district meeting, attending the state convention, planning three Homecomings and Western Day and helping with Special Olympics. And that’s the short list.

“Student Council works hard to make the first few weeks of school packed with fun events for the students and teachers,” Grant said.

The Howdy Week schedule is:

• Monday — Ice Cream Bash: Free to students and teachers, at Boomer Lake from 7-9 p.m.

• Tuesday — Sophomore and Junior Bowling Night: $40 per team of five students at Frontier Lanes starting at 9 p.m. Cash prizes are awarded to the teams with the best and most creative costumes.

• Wednesday — Dress up day: Students are encouraged to wear pink or blue (as a continuation of the theme of “The Battle.”)

• Thursday — Senior Bowling Night: $40 per team of five students at Frontier Lanes starting at 9 p.m. Cash prizes are awarded to the teams with the best and most creative costumes.

• Friday — “The Battle”: A variety of competitions such as three-legged races, obstacle courses, spoon races, ping pong matches, human wheel barrow races, etc. The competitions will be male vs. female. The gender winning the most competitions will receive a prize that evening. The event will be held at Hamilton Field from 8-11 p.m. and will cost students $5.
