A path to annexation

Larry Brown is a glutton for punishment.

Brown, the CEO of the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce, hosted a community discussion concerning annexation by the city of Stillwater. Not only is it a topic that draws fierce opposition from some corners, but it was one of the least-enjoyable times for Brown when he served as Stillwater’s mayor.

“I emerged from that process with every single inch of my skin bloodied, black and blue,” Brown said Thursday during the chamber forum. No one would think twice if Brown had never revisited the topic.

In fact, Brown said, after his experience as mayor he swore that he would never get involved in annexation again. Fortunately for Stillwater, he went against his vow.

Brown has shown previously that he can bring together disparate viewpoints to find common ground and we’re betting that he can do it again. Stillwater is going to grow and some of that growth is going to be through annexation. That is, simply, what cities do.

But it need not be a bloody battle. Those in favor of annexation and those opposed to it should calmly discuss the issue and reach an agreement that serves the interests of the most people possible. Brown, as someone who does not stand to gain directly from action or inaction, is a good person to lead this discussion.

When annexation does occur, it will not please everybody, no matter how it is accomplished. But if both sides are willing to accept Brown’s offer of help, the process should prove to be beneficial.
