Cowgirl golf opens season in Maryland

Oklahoma State’s women’s golf team will begin its fall season this weekend when it travels to Owings Mills, Md., to compete in the NCAA Fall Preview at Caves Valley Golf Course.

Laura Matthews’ squad enters the year ranked fifth in both the preseason Golf World/NGCA Coaches Poll and the Golfweek preseason ranking. OSU is coming off a 2007-08 season that produced three tournament titles, including its first conference championship under Matthews.

OSU will travel a lineup that includes three seniors and two freshmen to the season’s inaugural tournament. Leading the way will be first-team All-American Pernilla Lindberg, who enters her final season ranked ninth nationally.

Joining Lindberg in the lineup will be fellow seniors Amanda Johnson and Karin Kinnerud. Both Johnson and Kinnerud started all 12 events last season for the Cowgirls. A pair of players will be making their OSU debuts as Caroline Hedwall and Caroline Masson round out the starting five.

The 15-team field for the Preview is strong with four of the nation’s top five squads, Arizona State, Duke, Southern California and OSU, all taking part.
