Cowboys in third at Central Regional

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team posted a 293 during the first round of action at the NCAA Central Regional on Thursday at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course to finish the day in third place.

The Cowboys’ 9-over total was one stroke behind second-place Alabama and put them three shots off the pace of leader Wake Forest with 36 holes remaining.

OSU freshman Kevin Tway got off to a steady start with eight pars and one bogey to make the turn at 1-over 37. Tway then put together a back nine that included four birdies and three pars to get in with a 70 and tied for second place.

The 1-under total marked the fifth sub-par score in the last seven rounds for Tway, who came into the event riding consecutive runner-up finishes at the Big 12 Championship and The Maxwell.

Junior Trent Leon finished with an even-par 71 to stand in a tie for seventh place. The Dallas, Texas native recorded three birdies on his front nine to go out with a 2-under 34 score on the front before coming in with seven pars and two bogeys to finish at level par.

Freshman Rickie Fowler carded a 3-over 74 during his first round to come in tied for 24th place.

Fellow freshman Mark Johnson posted a 78 on the day to finish tied for 87th place, while sophomore Trent Whitekiller carded a 79 during his first round and is tied for 106th place.

The Cowboys, who are vying for their 62nd straight NCAA Championship berth, began their second round at 6 a.m. this morning paired with Alabama and Georgia Tech.
