Mercer, Lyons honored
Oklahoma State baseball players Tyler Lyons and Jordy Mercer have been named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second team.
Lyons, a sophomore pitcher, is majoring n sports management and finance and carries a 3.2 GPA. He is a two-time OSU Academic Achievement Award winner and has earned a spot on the OSU President?s honor roll (4.0). He’s also been named to the Big 12 Conference Commissioner’s honor roll three times and is a USAA All-America Scholar.
On the mound, Lyons leads OSU’s pitching staff with eight wins. In 11 starts, he is 8-2 with three complete games and a 3.42 ERA. He has pitched a team-high 79 innings and ranks second on the Cowboys with 67 strikeouts.
Mercer is a junior with a 3.3 GPA who is majoring in education. He is a three-time OSU Academic Achievement Award winner and has also been named to the OSU Dean’s Honor Roll. Other honors for Mercer include being named a USAA All-America Scholar and a five-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
A shortstop and closer for the Cowboys, Mercer is hitting .341 this season and leads OSU with 48 RBIs. He ranks second on the squad in home runs with nine. On the mound, he is the school’s all-time saves leader with 15, and in 12 appearances this season, he has seven saves to go along with a 3.38 ERA.
Oliver invited to Trials
DURHAM, N.C. — Oklahoma State sophomore pitcher Andrew Oliver has accepted an invitation to the 2008 USA Baseball National Team Trials.
Oliver is one of 12 collegiate players who have accepted invitations, which will be held June 11-23. In all, 32 players will be invited, with 22 of those players being selected for the National Team roster.
Oliver is 5-2 with a 2.10 ERA in 12 appearances and leads OSU with 71 strikeouts in 77 innings of work.
A native of Vermilion, Ohio, Oliver has allowed two or fewer earned runs in 10 of his 11 starts this season and opponents are hitting just .188 against him.
Oliver will be vying to become the ninth OSU player to earn a spot on a Team USA roster. Oliver’s current Cowboy teammate, shortstop Jordy Mercer, was a member of the club in 2007.
Former OSU star and current Oral Roberts head coach Rob Walton will be the ’08 USA Baseball National Team head coach.
More honors
Megan Castle, a sophomore on the OSU softball team, has been named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI second-team selection.
Castle, a designated player, is third on the team with her .424 slugging percentage and is fourth in batting with a .312 average. She has 25 RBI, six doubles, two home runs and a triple this season.
In the classroom, the Newcastle native sports a 3.55 grade point average, majoring in nutritional sciences with an allied health option.
Fowler a Hogan finalist
NORMAN —Oklahoma State freshman Rickie Fowler has been named one of three finalists for the Ben Hogan Award.
The Hogan is presented annually to the top men’s NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or junior college golfer taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during the last 12 months.
Fowler has competed in nine events this season for the Cowboys and has yet to finish lower than eighth. The Murrieta, Calif., native has a pair of victories to his credit, claiming medalist honors at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational in just his second collegiate start and helping the Cowboys to their first team title of the year.
Fowler posted a four-shot victory at the Big 12 Championship last month while guiding OSU to the 51st conference crown in program history. In the process, he earned both Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Year honors.
