Cowgirls start Round 2 in fifth

• Sweeney among early individual leaders

LINCOLN, Calif. —Oklahoma State’s women’s golf team posted a 293 team total during the first round at the NCAA West Regional on Thursday at Lincoln Hills Golf Club to end the day in fifth place.

The Cowgirls started today’s second round two strokes behind Arkansas and two shots clear of Brigham Young, Michigan State, Stanford and California. Top-ranked Southern California grabbed the first-round lead with a 5-under, 283 total and was one of just two squads in the 21-team field to break par on Day 1. Tulsa carded a 1-under 287 and started today in second place.

“We got off to a good start and we put ourselves in good position on Day 1, but there is a lot of golf left to be played,” head coach Laura Matthews said. “We are looking forward to getting back out there the next two days to see how much better we can play this golf course.”

Individually, USC’s Paola Moreno and Arizona’s Alison Walshe each carded 68s on Thursday to take the individual lead by one shot over a group of players that includes OSU freshman Jaclyn Sweeney.

The 2008 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year continued her strong play of late, firing a 3-under 69 to come in tied for third place. Sweeney, who is riding a string of three consecutive top 10s and is fresh off a win at the Big 12 Championship, made three birdies and no bogeys on her back nine and played her front nine in even par to post her first career sub-70 round.

Senior Tammy Clelland posted a 2-over 74 to come in tied for 39th, while juniors Pernilla Lindberg and Amanda Johnson both posted 75s and are tied for 47th. Junior Karin Kinnerud rounded out the lineup with an 83 and was tied for 102nd place.
