Fowler, Sweeney earn Big 12 honors

IRVING, Texas — Oklahoma State’s golf teams swept the Big 12 Conference Golfer of the Month awards for April, it was announced Wednesday as freshmen Rickie Fowler and Jaclyn Sweeney each earned the honor.
The distinction is the second for Fowler, while Sweeney was tabbed for the first time in her career. The duo is just the second pair of freshmen to sweep the monthly awards since 2002.
Fowler carded a 9-under 279 total on his way to medalist honors at the Big 12 Championship and guiding OSU to the team title in the process. The top-ranked player in the country, he also tied for eighth place at the Morris Williams earlier in the month.
The Murrieta, Calif., native was also named the Big 12’s Player and Newcomer of the Year.
In just her sixth career start, Sweeney picked up her first career win — claiming a four-shot victory at the Big 12 Championship while helping the Cowgirls to the team crown.
The victory extended her string of Top 10 finishes to three consecutive events and vaulted her to No. 12 in the national rankings. The Andover, Mass., native was also named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
