Oklahoma State’s Cowgirl softball team travels to Lubbock, Texas, this weekend to face Texas Tech in the final games of the regular season. Games are set for 2 p.m. today and noon on Sunday at Rocky Johnson Field.
OSU (25-23, 8-8) is tied for fourth place in the Big 12 with Texas (9-9). A sweep this weekend would push OSU into sole possession of fourth place, while a split would tie the Cowgirls with Texas for fourth. A sweep by the Red Raiders would drop OSU into sixth place, as Tech is 21-34 and 7-9 in league play.
The Cowgirls are led at the plate by a pair of freshmen. Second baseman Alysia Hamilton is batting .350 and leads the team in runs scored with 32. Shortstop Mariah Gearhart is hitting at a .342 clip and leads the team in hits with 51 and stolen bases, going 24-of-27 on the basepaths. Senior Kim Kaye leads the team with 13 home runs and 36 runs batted in. She is tied for second in school history for home runs in a season and career (26). One more round-tripper will tie for first.
OSU is 25-9 all-time against Tech, including a 10-3 mark in Lubbock. After a 10-year hiatus from the sport, the Red Raiders resurrected the program for entry into the Big 12 in 1996. Since then, the Cowgirls are 20-9 vs. Tech on the softball diamond.
