OKLAHOMA CITY — Mark Manning knows that beating Oklahoma State in wrestling doesn’t happen very often.
Entering Sunday’s dual at the Ford Center, the eighth-year head coach at Nebraska was 0-for-14 against the Cowboys. The Cornhuskers, dating back to 1921, were 2-49-1 against O-State.
“We beat (OSU) my second year at OU. I remember it like it was yesterday,” said Manning, thinking back to Nov. 11 of 1995 when, as an assistant at the University of Oklahoma, he was part of a dual victory over Oklahoma State. “It’s tough to beat Oklahoma State. (OSU) had a tough day (Saturday at Missouri) and I think (the travel) plays into the way they wrestled (Sunday).
“But we had a good day, though.”
The third-ranked Huskers (10-2) seemed a step quicker all day in beating the Cowboys, 22-13, in front of 2,496 in the ESPNU Wrestling Invitational.
Jake Dieffenbach’s gritty overtime victory over Stephen Dwyer at 165 pounds forged a 10-10 tie, but the Huskers, second at last weekend’s National Duals, picked up three-straight wins to seal the deal.
“It looks like we are trying instead of doing ... there is a big difference,” said O-State head coach John Smith, whose club fell to 10-2-1 with Northern Iowa coming to town this Friday. “We’ve got guys wanting things to happen rather than making things happen.
“Nebraska is a very strong team and last week put a little fire in their belly.”
Dieffenbach (14-2) rebounded from an overtime loss on Saturday with a down-to-the-wire win over Dwyer, ranked eighth. A stalling point on Dwyer (24-5) tied the match at 8-8 with :10 remaining and with :39 left in OT, Dieffenbach used a physical finish of a double leg for a 10-8 victory.
But Manning’s squad quickly regained momentum.
Brandon Browne (24-2) scored a first period takedown, and that would be enough in beating second-ranked Brandon Mason (19-3), 2-1.
The dagger came a bout later when Vince Jones countered a Jack Jensen shot with a cradle and fall at 1:48 that gave NU a 19-10 lead with two bouts to wrestle.
“We knew going in that 157, 165 and 174 were probably going to decide the dual,” Manning said. “There was a lot of hard-fought matches (Sunday). Up and down the line, just a tough dual.
“This feels great right now, but it won’t mean a lot in a week.”
“Every dual meet is like practice for the NCAAs and the Big 12s,” Jones said. “That’s what we are preparing for right now.”
Craig Brester made it official with a 6-3 win over Clayton Foster at 197, all six of his points coming in the final two minutes.
Jared Rosholt improved to 21-2 with his second win of the weekend, beating Jon May, 4-3, to fashion the final score.
The Pokes also got victories from top-ranked Coleman Scott (21-1), who used a third-period rideout with a two-point near-fall to beat No. 8 Kenny Jordan, 2-0; and fellow senior Nathan Morgan (23-1), who had eight takedowns in a 21-9 major decision at 141.
Defending NCAA champion Paul Donahoe rallied to beat Tyler Shinn, 8-6, in the opener and Chris Oliver beat Newly McSpadden thanks to a riding time point at 157.
NU’s Jordan Burroughs had 12 takedowns in a 25-11 major decision at 149 pounds.
The loss for O-State was just the 34th in 298 duals under Smith.
Wisconsin picked up an 18-15 win in the other dual on Sunday. The Badgers’ Dallas Herbst beat Joel Flaggert in overtime at 197 and a decision at heavyweight provided the difference.
