Wellness Center to offer program to help kick the habit

Smoking on the Oklahoma State University campus will become a no-no July 1. The word is out, this is a true statement. One wonders how smokers will feel about this new regulation-to-be. At the forefront of helping smokers to be rid of the habit is the Wellness Center, located adjacent to the Colvin Center. A program is scheduled for May 21 in the Wellness Center which is designed to help smokers lose the smoking habit.

Kicking the habit may put fear in the hearts of many smokers. “How in the world could I give up smoking?” they will ask. The program, scheduled to be held in the Wellness Center, will help those people lose the habit.

As promoters of the new regulation, the Wellness Center staff has put together a program that lasts only one hour and includes a free heart healthy lunch. It is open to all interested persons and there is no cost.

The speaker will be Jim Green, representing Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, speaking from noon to 1 p.m. Jim promotes a new product, Chantix, which has proved that it can help move an individual out of smoking and dropping the habit. The product, Green says, works on the theory of pharmacotherapy. “It acts on nicotine receptors that mitigates...(smoking),” Green says. Also to be discussed will be a comprehensive support plan “that is free to patients when they are prescribed Chantix.”

Registration can be made by calling 744-WELL (9355) or e-mailing wellness@okstate.edu on or before May 16. The Wellness Center is located at 1514 West Hall of Fame. Free parking is available across Hall of Fame in a university parking lot.
