OSU Botanical Garden News 05-04-08

Larry Jones

On April 25, a group of about 20 ambassadors and OSU Botanical Garden staff members went on our annual spring field trip. This year’s trip was to the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation in Ardmore and we had a great time.

Our visit started with some introductory remarks about the Foundation. Lloyd Noble, who grew up in southern Oklahoma and went on to become an enormously successful oil man, set up the Foundation in 1945 and named it in honor of his father, Samuel Roberts Noble.

Although Lloyd Noble was an oil man, he never lost sight of the fact that many of those around him were farmers and ranchers and he always thought there were more productive ways to manage their land and their crops or herds.

Therefore, the Foundation began with an agricultural division to help the farmers and ranchers be more successful as they managed their land, crops and herds. Today, the Foundation works with 1,500 farmers and ranchers within a 100-mile radius of Ardmore providing consultation on many aspects of farming and ranching simply intending to make life better for those they work with.

Today, there are other divisions and other activities which next week’s article will touch on. If you have an opportunity to visit the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation please do so. You’re sure to be impressed.

Larry Jones is an ambassador at the OSU Botanical Garden.
