Arcadia ‘Mac’ Briggs

Arcadia “Mac” Briggs, 84, entered into rest Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 at her home in Yale. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Church of God in Yale. Brother Mike Clark and Mich Dershem will officiate. Burial will follow in the Lawson Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Cushing.

Arcadia was born Jan. 14, 1924 in Tyler, Texas to Clifford and Nina (Allison) McEntire. During World War II, she joined the military. While stationed in Norman, she met the love of her life, Vergal Briggs. They started their journey of 62 years together on June 12, 1945 in Norman. They lived many places, among them, San Diego, White Sands, N.M., Hutchinson, Kan., Millington, Tenn., Albuquerque, N.M., Sanford, Fla., and Kodiak, Alaska. They had six children and sometimes she took in others. Friends were always welcome. She was a den mother for Cub Scouts, taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school.

In 1973, Vergal retired from the U.S. Navy and they moved with the three youngest children to settle on the old home place in Yale. Later, she joined the First Baptist Church and Yale Study Club. She enjoyed painting but the center of her life was always her family.

Arcadia is survived by her sister Virginia Cameron (Paul) of Tulsa; five of her children, Vergal Briggs, Jr. of Orlando, Fla., Nina Harrison (Bob) of Ramona, Calif., Twylla McKinley (Steve) of Marysville, Wash., Janette Dykes (Kevin) of Yale, and Boice Briggs (Tammy) of Yale; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Joanna Briggs, sister Lizzie McEntire, and granddaughter Wendy Harrison.
