Julia Anderson Martin

Mrs. Julia (“Judy”) Maud Anderson Martin, age 89, of Cushing, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 16, 2008, in Linwood Village Assisted Living Residence. She was born in Cushing Oct. 30, 1918, to T.A. (“Nick”) and Mina Anderson and was educated in the Cushing School system where she graduated with honors from Cushing High School. After graduation from high school, she attended Oklahoma A & M College in Stillwater. While in college, she met and married John Vernon (“Swede”) Martin.

Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years in October, 2006; as well as her parents; her brother, Jim Anderson; and her two sisters, Jetty Cook and Jesse Griffeth, both of Cushing.

She is survived by her two children, Vernon Dee Martin and his wife, Kanda, of St. Simons Island, Ga. and Judy Anderson Ostervold and her husband, Lars B. (“Bernie”), of Columbus, Ga. She is also survived by five grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

During her adult life, she and her husband lived in Lindsey, Chickasha, Pauls Valley, Auburn, Ala., Columbia, Mo., Ft. Worth, Texas and various other cities due to the advancement of her husband’s career with the United States Soil Conservation Service. They retired to Stillwater in 1979. When their health began to fail, they relocated to her home town of Cushing. In Stillwater, she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, the Exchange Club, NARFE, the Soil Conservation Society and the Stillwater Golf and Country Club. She also assisted her husband as an advisor to Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity at Oklahoma State University. She was a member of the OSU Posse Club and the Oklahoma State University Foundation.

The great pleasures of her life were gardening, cattle ranching, supporting the activities and interests of OSU and being with her family. Mrs. Martin was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her family and friends.

The family expresses special thanks for the assistance and care given by the staff in Linwood Village, the Judith Karman Hospice staff, Dr. Randy Grellner and his medical staff and the members of Mrs. Martin’s extended family in the Cushing area who supported her with love and affection while she was a resident of Linwood Village.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations to the Judith Karman Hospice, P.O. Box 818, Stillwater, OK 74076 or the Oklahoma State University Foundation, P.O. Box 1749, Stillwater, OK 74076-1749.

Palmer Marler Funeral Home in Cushing is in charge of arrangements which will be announced at a later date.
