E. Grant Murphy

E. Grant Murphy, 86, of Ladera Ranch, Calif., died in his sleep Monday, March 3, 2008. His remains will be interred at the Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego on Monday.

Grant Murphy was born in Stillwater on July 25, 1921 to Henry “Pat” and Ione Murphy. He graduated from Stillwater High School. Grant went to college at Oklahoma State University, where he pledged the Kappa Sigma fraternity and graduated with a degree in biological science.

Grant joined the U.S. Navy after graduation and enrolled in medical school at the University of Oklahoma. He saw active duty as an intern and medical officer on board ship along the Atlantic coast and in the Caribbean from 1945 to 1948.

After his naval service, Grant completed his training in pathology in St. Louis before moving to Flint, Mich., to practice at Hurley, St. Joseph and McLaren hospitals. At 34, he was appointed chief of the pathology department at McLaren Hospital, where he continued to practice until his retirement in 1986. After retiring Grant moved to Southern California. He later moved back to Grand Blanc, Mich., to be nearer to his friends. In 2006, he moved back to California again to live with his son.

Throughout his life Grant enjoyed the outdoors. Like so many other Michiganders, he headed north to experience the beauty of the state. As a member of the Durkee Lakes Club, he enjoyed fishing and hunting in its woods. As a longtime owner of a cottage on Walloon Lake, he had the good fortune to spend many days there boating and relaxing on the porch among the pines.

Grant is survived by his brother, Patrick Murphy of Kingswood, Texas, and his sister Phyllis Chapman of Bartlesville; his three children, Michael, of Ladera Ranch, Kathleen, of Bozeman, Mont., and Colin of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and grandson, Matthew Wells, of Bozeman.

Contributions may be made in his name to the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, Oklahoma City.
