It’s time for teens to read

Everett Brazil III

The National Library Association is celebrating Teen Reading Week in October, but Stillwater Public Library is stretching the week to a month-long event to encourage teens to read.

“It’s to encourage young adults to read for the fun of it,” said Recilla Harms, a teen librarian and head of adult services.

Teen Read Month, “Books with Bite,” begins Tuesday with a cooking program called “Cooking with Bite.” Teens will learn several simple recipes and will get to eat the cookies afterward.

On Saturday, the Oklahoma Department of Libraries will host young adult authors P.C. and Kristin Cast, a mother and daughter writing team known for vampire novels. The authors will be available for a book signing from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the library.

The publisher has released a limited number of the books for free, which will be distributed on a first-come-first-serve bases and will be available for signing by the authors. The Casts also will be available after the book signing for an online chat with teens.

The library will show a vampire movie that inspired a popular television series for teens on Oct. 23. The movie is rated PG-13.

The National Library Association celebrates National Teen Read Week each year during fall break, a celebration Stillwater has participated in for 11 years, but the library saw a decrease in children and teens during fall break and extended the event throughout the month to give teens a better chance to participate.

“We had programs that week and had very little turnout, so we just skip that week,” Harms said.

For more information about Teen Read Month, contact Stillwater Public Library, 1107 S. Duck, at 372-3633, or visit library.stillwater.org.
