LU vice president fills in

• Haysbert attending New York conference when Regents meet

Jacob Longan - NewsPress

Langston’s JoAnn W. Haysbert was the only university president absent from Friday’s regular meeting of the Board of Regents for the Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical Colleges.

Angela Kelso-Watson, vice president for fiscal affairs, said Haysbert sent her “sincere appreciation to (the Regents) for allowing her the opportunity to participate in the National Service Learning Summit” on Thursday and Friday in New York City.

“She is very proud to represent Langston University and the great state of Oklahoma at this unique summit,” Kelso-Watson added.

Kelso-Watson then presented Langston’s requests to the board.

First was adoption of a memorial resolution for Betty Brown, who worked at the school for 10 years as access services supervisor and library assistant before dying unexpectedly last month.

She also said they had accepted the termination of Richard Mumford, affirmative action officer and instruction and executive director of the Langston Community Development Corp.

Charles King was hired as Mumford’s replacement for $62,000 per year.

Also hired was Kathy Simmons as registrar, replacing the retired Margie Allen-Bonner, for $70,000 annually.

They removed the stipulation that prevented a student who had been a full-time student the past year from enrolling in the bachelor’s program in organizational leadership.

The budget was revisited to reflect receipt of a $1.5 million allocation for the Agriculture and Extension program, a $20,000 expense for marketing the Reach Higher program and an estimated $30,000 for the teacher residency visitation program.

Ratification of a continuance of a pair of grants in rehabilitation counseling and services funded by the U.S. Department of Education for a total of $250,000 was granted. Also, two additional grants from the USDE totaling $500,000 were continued.

A $150,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for Head Start was continued.

Two expenditures were then authorized — $138,672.50 to Alva Roofing for completion of Phase II of the roof replacement at C.F. Gayles Fieldhouse and $77,000 to AT&T for wiring.
