Lip sync contest raises money for March for Babies

Zeta Phi Beta does what it can to help the March of Dimes.

To that end, the sorority is hosting a lip synching contest on Thursday, the day before the March for Babies.

The contest will be at 8 p.m. in room 313 of the Classroom Building at the intersection of Hester and Morrill.

Admission is $3 and entry into the contest is $10. A portion of the proceeds will go to the March of Dimes, “the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health,” according to its Web site.

“With the walk being Friday, we decided to do the lip sync competition the (day) before to tell people to go to the walk,” said Alicia Hill, president of the local chapter of Zeta Phi Beta. “We’ve never had the competition before. Last year we had a table soliciting funds for a week or two. That’s what we usually do every year. We changed it up this year.”

They are still hosting a table in the Student Union lobby from noon until 3 p.m. all week and all of the donations there go to the charity. They will also take donations at the contest.

The $3 admission is worth an entry for raffle prizes. Extra entries can be bought for any 10 pieces of change, and that money will go to the charity.

The contest will be judged based on a variety of criteria, including creativity and audience appeal. A freshman, sophomore, junior and senior from the crowd will be picked to judge.

The winner gets $250.

The senior broadcast journalism/public relations major from Lawton said she hopes the contest will become an annual event.

She added that a service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, is helping with the table in the Student Union.
