Arsonist receives deferred sentence

Jonna Rae Murrell, 37, Perkins received a deferred sentence in Payne County District Court on Wednesday on a charge of arson in the fourth degree.

Murrell pleaded guilty to the charge in July.

She received a deferred sentence of five years.

As a condition of probation, Special Judge Phillip Corley said, Murrell must pay a $250 fine; complete 50 hours of community service in six months; pay $250 to the Victims Compensation Fund; complete recommendations in the Level of Services Inventory completed by the Department of Corrections, including participating in a mental health evaluation, outpatient counseling, substance abuse counseling, anger management courses and cognitive behavior training; and remain under the supervision of the Department of Corrections.

She must also pay court costs and the costs of her incarceration.

“My opinion is that it is a real good disposal of a difficult case,” said District Attorney Rob Hudson.

Murrell was accused of trying to set fire to her mobile home while her 8-month-old granddaughter was inside. She was originally charged with attempted arson in the first degree, which Hudson said is fourth-degree arson.
