• Oklahoma introducing new automobile license plates

The Oklahoma Tax Commission has chosen a new license plate and has initiated a program for those who wish to keep their current tag numbers.

Anyone wishing to keep the license plate number on his or her state-issued plate must fill out the 710-Z License Plate Retention form found at the Oklahoma Tax Commission’s Web site. It must be mailed by Nov. 1, and new plates will be mailed in January 2009. A fee of $17 ($15 for registration, plus a $2 mailing fee) will be required and may be paid by check, money order or credit card.

All other plates will be issued at no cost when vehicle owners pay their registration, and new vehicles registered in 2009 will automatically be issued the plates.

The License Plate Retention Program is only for currently registered state-issued plates. Personalized plates and those for organizations and other interests are not included, said Kathleen McBee, owner of Stillwater Tag Agency.

The Oklahoma Centennial Committee wanted the plates to be issued for the Oklahoma’s Centennial celebration in 2007. Though it had been submitted to the State Senate and House of Representatives, it wasn’t approved until recently, McBee said. The new design features a white background featuring the Sacred Rain Arrow sculpture by Oklahoma artist Allan Houser. The new plate may be viewed at the Oklahoma Tax Commission’s Web site.

Forms may be downloaded from the Oklahoma Tax Commission’s Web site, www.tax.ok.gov, or by visiting local tag agencies. The agency for Stillwater, Stillwater Tag Agency, is located at 702 S. Western Road.
