Local attorney wins his first campaign over former Stillwater vice mayor for state House

Stillwater attorney Cory Williams is 1-for-1 in political campaigns.

He received 64.97 percent of the vote to defeat former Stillwater Vice Mayor Ruth Anne Kennedy, 1,150-620, in the Democratic primary for State Representative of District No. 34.

There were 18 under votes and one over.

After winning the first campaign he entered, Williams will meet Stillwater’s Aaron Carlson, a Republican, in the general election Nov. 4.

“Something like (this win) helps with momentum going into the general,” Williams said. “More than the outcome, I’m pleased with the race we ran. Both Ruth Anne and I ran on what we believed and what our experience was, why we thought we were qualified. I don’t think there was one negative ad. I don’t think anyone can cite an incident where anyone said anything bad about the other.

“This is politics like it should be.”

Attempts to reach Kennedy on Tuesday night were unsuccessful as calls to her cell phone went straight to voice mail. A message seeking comment was not returned.

Williams said he hopes his race with Carlson will not be about one party versus the other.

“We have a large constituency out there I need to get out and meet,” he said. “My biggest obstacle and goal is to prevent straight-party tickets. I want people to meet me, meet him and make an educated and informed decision about who would best represent Stillwater.”
