Your blood is needed now

• Red Cross says supplies are running low

Susan Brinker - NewsPress

Every year, the summer season goes on record as a challenging time for blood collections. This can be attributed to vacations, holidays and the fact that college and high school donors are away on break. The Red Cross reports from one-third to one-half of people with appointments are not showing up.

“Summer is definitely here,” said Jan Hale, Red Cross communications manager. “It’s hot outside and uncomfortable to get out. But, the reality is regardless of the time of year, or the temperature outside, every two seconds someone still needs blood. Our hospitals count on the Red Cross and the community to keep a steady supply of blood available all the time.”

The Red Cross offers the following tips for a successful blood donation in the hot weather: Get a good night’s sleep before your donation appointment; while the recommendation is to always drink 6-8 glasses of water before donating, in the extreme heat, it is highly encouraged that this be the minimum amount of liquids consumed by blood donors the day before and the day of their donation; avoid tea, coffee or other beverages with caffeine; wear cool, loose clothing and eat foods rich in iron starting the day before you donate.

Stillwater residents can donate every Tuesday at the Red Cross Chapter, 114 W. Eighth Ave., from noon until 6 p.m.

To schedule an appointment, call (800) Give Life (448-3543.) Anyone who comes to donate at a Red Cross Southwest Region drive or fixed site through Aug. 31 will be entered to win $1,000 in gas.

To donate blood you must be 17 years of age, weigh 110 pounds and be in generally good health.

Donors must bring photo identification to their appointments.
