Investment resolutions OK’d

• County Commission also approves street overlay

The Payne County commissioners Monday discussed resolutions pertaining to the investment of county funds.

The commissioners voted to approve resolutions 2008-16 and 2008-17, which would leave the interest earned on county investments in those accounts and ensure the safekeeping of county funds in various banks throughout the county and state.

They also voted to pay yearly membership dues of $665 to the County Officers and Deputies Association of Oklahoma. By being a part of this organization, Commission Chairwoman Gloria Hesser said, commissioners are provided with education and are able to lobby with other commissioners to pass legislation.

“This will allow us to go to conferences,” Hesser said. “It’s an association of county officials and it’s kind of a family affair. We lobby together in the government on behalf of our counties.”

The commissioners also voted to enter into service agreements with the Cleveland County Regional Juvenile Detention center and the Oklahoma Juvenile Detention center in Enid. The cost per child per day is $19.81 in Cleveland and $23.26 in Enid.

The commissioners also went into executive session to discuss a pending lawsuit brought against the county by Joseph A Courtright over fair labor standards. Courtright filed the suit March 4. The commissioners took no action on the issue after they returned from the executive session.

Lastly, the commissioners held a bid opening for the overlay on Ninth running east to Cushing city limits.

Commissioners received bids from Quapaw Company for $65 per ton, and from Bailey’s Paving Co. in Carney from $66 per ton.

Commissioner Bill Deering said the chip seal put on last year was no longer working and the 2.5 miles stretch of road needed repaving.

“Once I knew it needed to be replaced I got an estimate that it will cost $98,000 for the whole thing,” Deering said.

The commissioners will meet July 14 in the County Administration Building.
