Cushing graduation is tonight

Cushing High School’s graduating seniors will walk the stage to receive their diplomas tonight.
Valedictorian Jade Watson is scheduled to give the commencement address to the student body, friends and family.
Among the 111 graduating seniors, Jacklyn Wright has received the honor of salutatorian.
The ceremony begins at 7 p.m. at the Cushing High fieldhouse, 1700 E. Walnut.
Principal James Lauerman said members of the class have received more than $1 million in scholarships and other money for college.
“It’s a class unique unto itself, as they all are,” Lauerman said.
Lauerman, who has been at the school for 30 years as a counselor, coach, vice principal and, for the last 25 years, principal, said the class is similar to other classes: “They can be ornery, they can be great.”
Over time, he has noticed the students changing as society has changed.
“If I need something done with my cell phone or computer or iPod, I ask the kids,” he said. “They know about it and I don’t. They are quite literate on electronics and those things.”
This year has ended as the previous 30 have ended.
“I enjoyed having them and I will miss them,” Lauerman said. “But there will be another class full of them next year.”
