eBay helping city sell surplus

Jon Kocan - NewsPress

The city of Stillwater is now using the power of eBay to help sell surplus vehicles.

Last week, several vehicles went to the online auction block for the first time. From Crown Victorias to ambulances and trash trucks, they can all be yours.

John Maehs, city fleet superintendent, said the idea came due to the city not receiving bids for surplus vehicles. Other cities throughout the state and country have begun the same practice, and Stillwater is getting bids each day.

“We’ve had some pretty good luck,” Maehs said. “I think it’s going to work well for us.”

Auctioning the vehicles on eBay will allow more buyers to view Stillwater’s selection. The sealed bidding process is limiting, and often produced no bids for the city.

Stillwater’s online listing currently includes 12 vehicles. Maehs said if all goes well, the city may expand surplus items auctioned on eBay.

The city’s auction items can be viewed on their Web page at, http://stillwater.org/ auctions.
