Library plans writing camp for teenagers

Stillwater Public Library’s summer reading program is over, but area teens have the opportunity to participate in one more creative activity before school begins: “Writing Camp @ Your Library.”

Teens will be given a topic, and they will use popular literature to create their own versions of stories.

The writing camp will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Stillwater Public Library.

“No prerequisite talent needed — just the desire to write in an open environment,” said camp leader Judy Ramsey.

A Stillwater native, Ramsey recently retired from Stillwater Junior High School where she taught eighth- and ninth-grade language arts for 27 years. Instead of grading papers, she has decided to incorporate the best, most fun parts of teaching writing into this program for adolescents.

“This program is the perfect activity to initiate our new monthly Writing Club, which will begin meeting in September on the third Friday of each month,” said Recilla Harms, teen librarian.

Library employee and OSU student Rion Wahpekeche will assist with the monthly writing group.

The Writing Camp is free and open to all young people in grades six to 12.
