America first

While watching the news on this beautiful Monday, I see the stock market has dropped 500-plus points.

Changing channels, both presidential candidates tell me not to worry, they have a plan to make our lives better.

This brings to mind writings from 1931, which almost parallel today, and I quote:

“Wages drop as our dividends stop; payments in gold are suspended; suppress all your signs the banker cries — “It’s a sign the Depression has ended.”

The stocks that I hold have been “heavily sold.” To the world I’m a debtor. Europe’s future is blurred, but I’m cheered by the word of an expert who says, “things look better.”

I have just sold my car, all my nerves are ajar, and my neck would make someone a ropeful; they have called all my notes but my banker says, “The signs are decidedly hopeful.”

This is only a few lines from “The Once Over,” by H.I. Phillips.

How many times have you heard words to this effect quoted lately?

There’s an adage that says “what goes around, comes around,” and man is that true!

Could we all just put aside our political differences and concentrate on making this wonderful country a better place for us all?

We are all fortunate to be Americans and have the hard-fought privilege of being raised in a democracy.

With the good Lord’s help, let’s take care of America before we try to save the world.
