No conventions?

For all the talk from members of both political parties, especially about changing the tenor of campaigning, it has been demonstrated in both party conventions that rising above the fray to a more civil and humane approach to our differences is contrary to the nature of the political beast. It is clear that, as in the economic sphere the bottom line trumps all decisions, in the the realm of politics winning at any cost is the goal. Defamation of the opponents’ character, ability, and motive through sarcasm and cynicism seems to be a favorite tactic of candidates. Supporters give encouragement to these barbs by cheers and laughter at even the cruelest of remarks.

May I suggest that we, the people, must demand more of both ourselves and our candidates. Maybe a good place to begin is the abolishment of the traditional party conventions.
