‘For the Bible tells me so’

In a May 3 letter, Dennis Gronquist refers to me as a gay activist who has chosen a morally and socially unacceptable lifestyle.

First, I am not gay and I have not done enough to merit the “activist” label, but thanks to Gronquist for the compliment. I wonder why he would make these assumptions? Apparently because he cannot fathom respecting and defending equality and justice for all, instead reserving it only for those who look, sound, believe and act just like him. You do not have to be gay, Gronquist, to understand that these principles apply to everyone. I hope that clears up some of your confusion.

Second, it is absurd to claim that people who show romantic love for each other are immoral if they are the same sex. It is no more immoral to be homosexual than it is to be left-handed, seven feet tall or red-headed. Each of these traits is uncommon, biologically based and totally irrelevant to discussions of morality.

Third, individuals or groups interested in contributing to a positive environment based on knowledge and respect might consider starting a “Fine by me” Project (http://www.finebyme.org/) or hosting a showing of the excellent documentary, “For the Bible Tells Me So,” (http://www.forthebibletellsmeso.org/).

I hope this information is helpful. Thanks to everyone who has helped me to see that the homophobic views expressed by Gronquist (and Rep. Kern) are neither moral nor in the majority.
