The taxpayers subsidize the production of ethanol. In so doing, many fields are converted from producing food to producing corn for ethanol production. This in turn causes the price of virtually all food to take a quantum leap.

Due to scarcity, wheat and corn prices increase as do all of the products that are made from them. Beef prices increase because some of the corn that was used to feed them is going to ethanol production. Restaurants must raise their prices because the foods that they buy have increased, squeezing their profit margins. This takes us back to the taxpayer, who must “eat” all of the increases that their taxes helped to create.

Of course it is the federal government who came up with the idea. The taxpayers are not responsible for the mess. We are only required to finance it. Also, the fact that we use corn sweetener is due to the high tariffs on imported sugar. These high tariffs benefit people who have paid lobbyists on K Street in Washington to look out for their interests. If we could purchase foreign sugar for ethanol production at market price, it would have eight times the efficiency of corn sweetener.

I can’t wait to see what the feds do with our health care.
