Humane Society welcomes new faces

At their Annual Meeting, the Humane Society of Stillwater recently elected board members to seats on their board. Reelected to seats to terms expiring in 2011 were Josh Krawczyk, Cheryl Chilton, Melissa DeLacerda, and A'Lissa DeVorss.

Karen Cristiano was a newer member elected for a seat although she has served as a board member in the past. Martha McMillian was elected to fill the position of a board member who stepped down and her term expires in 2009.

At the board meeting following the annual meeting, board officers were elected. They are Josh Krawcyzk as president, Shelley Budke as vice president, A'Lissa DeVorss as secretary, and Samantha Krawczyk as treasurer.

For the year of 2007, the Humane Society of Stillwater shelter adopted into new homes 130 cats and 152 dogs and they also handled the adoptions of 48 cats and 124 dogs from City Animal Welfare. During that year 149 cats and 161 dogs were transferred from City Animal Welfare to the Humane Society of Stillwater.

Another Eat For The Animals fundraiser is scheduled to take place on April 30 at the Rib Crib from 5pm to 10pm.

These events help the Humane Society of Stillwater raise funds since they are a non-profit that relies on donations and fundraisers to be able to continue operations.

A portion of the evening's proceeds is donated to the Humane Society of Stillwater.

As the Michael Vick dogfighting episodes demonstrated, the public at large has little tolerance for such cruelties. The Humane Society of the United States wants to equip law enforcement agents and humane investigators with the tools they need to crack down on dogfighting.

The organization (HSUS) is now offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a dogfighter. The newly increased reward (doubled from the offer of $2,500) will aid law enforcement in investigating and prosecuting these heinous crimes.
