Art for personal enjoyment

Stillwater artist showing her work at OSU Foundation gallery

Jacob Longan - NewsPress

Stillwater native Beverely H. Hanes has been painting since she was 17.

That was, well, let’s just say a while ago.

The artist who works with three water media is showing 28 pieces for the next two months in the Malinda Berry Fischer Art Gallery inside the Oklahoma State University Foundation, 400 S. Monroe.

The opening reception is Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Each piece is for sale, with prices ranging from $100 to $1,250. They include transparent watercolor, fluid acrylics with rubbing alcohol and gouache (opaque watercolor). There are ice paintings, a piece done on Saran Wrap and one done almost exclusively with one finger rather than a brush.

“I really, really enjoy what I do,” said Hanes, owner of The Art Bin and Frameworks. “It’s extremely wonderful when you have a clientele who starts coming back and forth.”

Ten percent of the proceeds will be donated to the OSU department of art scholarships.

OSU is Hanes’ alma mater. She also studied in Europe, at Wichita State and San Francisco’s de Young Museum and Museum of Modern Art.

“I feel that I’ve accomplished everything I wanted to do in life,” Hanes said. “I (was chosen for a national show) and that’s the biggest thing I wanted to do. I wanted to create for me because I’m happy when I do it and other people really enjoy my work.”

She has had only six “one-man shows” but often sends a few pieces to collaborative events.

Hanes said she considers herself an artist, not a painter.

“An artist is when you’ve reached the top,” Hanes said. “There are a lot of people who paint, but they aren’t free with their painting. They have to look at something to paint.

“I don’t look at anything to paint. It’s all out of my head because I see all the time. That’s registered in there. When I want to paint, I start and I look and I see whatever it’s coming along to be, that’s what it is.”
