A breezy Monday at SCC

The food at Texas Roadhouse was a little more satisfying than 18 holes of golf at Stillwater Country Club on Monday.
After a brutal day of windy conditions, the local steakhouse fed the field of teams at the annual Stillwater Pioneer Invitational.
Edmond Santa Fe Green — actually the program’s junior varsity — won the team title with a 33-over par 313 total. Union was second at 322 with the Stillwater varsity at 329 and in third in the 17-team field.
“All things considered, we got the tournament played,” said SHS head coach Bill Defee. “The wind made it a very difficult day to play golf.”
Union’s No. 5, sophomore Bobby Goben, was one of two players to card a 5-over 75. Goben earned medalist on a reverse scoreboard tiebreaker with Holland Hall’s Ben Wilson.
Santa Fe’s Ben Gonzalez and Enid’s Chris Worrell each shot 76 with Stillwater junior Chris Muriana in a group of three tied at 78.
“Putting killed me (Monday),” Muriana said. “Not a good day.”
With greens that were aerated within the last week and a nasty, gusting wind, only 10 players stayed in the 70s. Thirteen shot over 100.
SHS senior Clint Burley turned in an 81 with sophomore Taylor Onley at 83. Seniors Rob Bennett (87) and Sam Brown (88) rounded out the Pioneers’ squad.
The Stillwater Gold shot 340 and finished eighth. Junior Peyton Lamb led with an 81 with sophomore Tyler Grantham turning in an 83.
Union’s Brian Carney, the medalist a year ago with a 71, shot 83 on Monday. Not since 2004, when Sand Springs’ Austin Quentin shot 3-under 67, has the medalist at the SHS Invitational shot under par.
Stillwater returns to the course Thursday at Owasso.

At Pawnee
PAWNEE — Chandler freshman Caitlin Swisher shot 85 to win the Pawnee Invitational on Monday. Swisher edged Frontier sophomores Jeneva Nelson and Hope Conneywerdy, who each shot 86, for medalist honors.
Cushing’s Allison Box (90) and Sara Lane (98) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 33-player field.
Frontier’s 381 won team honors. Pawnee (403), Cushing (407), Chandler (413) and Haskell (562) rounded out the field.
