The College Answer Guy

Lance Millis

In running my college preparation Web sites, the most popular pages have always been the ones that featured information about college students, and what their lives are really like at college. To that end, here is the text of a recent interview I did with a college student.

FIRST NAME: Mike

HOMETOWN: Tulsa

CLASSIFICATION: Senior

COLLEGE: Oklahoma State University

MAJOR: Secondary Education, Science

FAVORITE TYPE OF MUSIC: I listen to a lot of different music, but I’ve been hooked on reggae lately

SAND OR SNOW? Snow! Give me a day snowboarding over a week at the beach anytime.

SPORTS CAR OR 4X4? I wish I had a sports car.

SPORTS OR ARTS? Sports.

SALAD OR STEAK? Steak

DO YOU HAVE YOUR OWN COMPUTER AT SCHOOL? DESKTOP OR LAPTOP? I own a desktop

WHAT ONE THING COULD YOU NOT SURVIVE WITHOUT? My iPod. I need some noise when I’m studying, and it is a huge help when I’m at the library.

DO YOU HAVE YOUR OWN CAR? COULD YOU SURVIVE WITHOUT IT? I have a truck, but I could survive without it, thanks to the Stillwater/OSU bus system.

DO YOU WORK DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR? HOW MUCH? WHERE? I do not work during the school year.

WHO HAS HAD THE BIGGEST IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE? WHY/HOW? Other than obvious answers (family, etc) I would say some of my high school teachers. The experiences I had with some exceptional teachers helped me choose teaching as a career.

WHAT ACTIVITIES ARE YOU INVOLVED IN AT SCHOOL? College of Education Student Council, National Science Teachers of America, Intramural Sports, New Student Orientation Leader.

WHAT DID YOU ACTUALLY DO TO PREPARE FOR COLLEGE? Not enough! I only really talked to some older friends that I had. I should have signed up for some orientation/welcome-to-campus programs.

HOW MUCH DO YOU ACTUALLY STUDY? Maybe not quite the recommended 2 hours outside of class per credit hour, but close to it.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO GET TO KNOW YOUR PROFESSORS? I make sure I introduce myself, and actively participate in class.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF COLLEGE? Feeling like I belong to a huge family/community.

WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE PART OF COLLEGE? Waking up for 8:30 chemistry classes.

WHAT SURPRISED YOU MOST ABOUT COLLEGE? Liking the 8:30 chemistry class when I got there.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN? Take part in orientation programs, and get involved on campus early.

WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO DO AFTER GRADUATION? I plan to teach high school science somewhere in Oklahoma, at least for now.
