Art on Main

• Business Improvement District hosts ‘Art Night’

Laura Wilson - NewsPress

Downtown will host artists of all kinds Thursday during “Art Night,” part of “Music and Motion on Main Street.”

“Art Night,” from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., will feature local artists showing and selling their work, said Angela McLaughlin, Stillwater Business Improvement District coordinator, along with a sidewalk chalk art contest, music and wine sampling.

“We’re partnering with Multi Arts to do something different and fun for kids and adults,” McLaughlin said.

The chalk art contest, on the south side of the old Hallmark building at Seventh and Main, will include two categories: one for children 8-12 years old and one for anyone 13 years old or older. Activities are also planned for children under 8, according to the city’s website.

“That’s a great stretch of sidewalk,” McLaughlin said.

Seventh Avenue, she added, will be closed from the alley to Main.

Basic chalk colors will be available for participants in the contest, McLaughlin said, but contestants may also bring their own chalk or tools.

The Friends of Multi Arts Center will be on Main Street at Chris Salmon Plaza with art by instructors and students and information about Multi Arts classes, said Jessica Novak, Multi Arts Center supervisor.

Other artists are welcome to participate in the evening, McLaughlin said, and can do so by contacting her at 742-8359 or amclaughlin@stillwater.org.

“We would love for anyone to come in,” she said.

In addition, the contemporary Christian group Potters Clay will perform, and Zannotti’s Wine Bar will host wine sampling.

“Music and Motion on Main Street” is an effort to bring people downtown in the evening, McLaughlin said. It is a series of events on Thursday evening that started in June. No events are planned in August, she said, but it may start again in the fall.

“It’s something we’re trying to start this summer that’s basically an effort to make more of a nightlife area in the downtown area,” she explained.

So far, a Celtic group and a blues band have performed, she said, and one event was rained out.

“We’re very open to all kinds of music,” McLaughlin said. “We encourage people who do have music to come out, eat at the restaurants, go out and walk around.”

Anyone interested in performing at a future “Music and Motion on Main Street” night can contact McLaughlin for information.
