Coalition announces winning posters

The Payne County Breathe Easy Coalition recently sponsored a poster contest in conjunction with the 13th Annual Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids Kick Butts Day.

Highland Park Elementary School fifth graders created posters that reflected the harmful effects of tobacco use. Winners from Mr. Purdy’s class were first place, Kitra Smith, and honorable mention, Paige Taylor and Taryn Sample. Winners from Mrs. Welch’s class were first place, Andrew Knudson, and honorable mention, Morgan Been and Rodriquez Johnson.

“Because of all the money put into tobacco advertising, we felt the poster contest was important in order to remind the students of the harmful effects of tobacco. Regardless of how tobacco products are packaged or presented, tobacco use isn’t glamorous, it will in some way affect your health” said Joyce Montgomery, co-chairman of the Coalition.

Tobacco spends $13.3 billion a year, more than $36 million a day on advertising and marketing, according to Coalition information.
