Laura Wilson - NewsPress

A bill to require voters to show ID at the polls failed in the state Senate, and I don’t really understand why.

What’s wrong with making sure the person voting is who he says he is? I’d think we would want to do that, but obviously I’m wrong.

What is particularly baffling is the argument by some Democrats that no fraud has been documented and that requiring voters to show ID would stop some people from voting and help Republicans.

First, isn’t the time to stop fraud before it happens? I mean, ideally, we want to prevent fraud in the first place, not fix it after it happens. Do you need to see fraud before doing something? Isn’t it enough to see where it is possible and close the loophole before someone takes advantage of it?

Second, I hope it would stop people from voting — those people who aren’t supposed to be voting where they’re voting.

I don’t see how it would hurt other people, though, or help Republicans in particular. Do our Democratic state senators think Democrats are too stupid to have IDs? As a registered Democrat, I’m offended at that.

You need an ID to cash a check, to fly, often just to use a credit card. Shouldn’t voting be at least as secure?
