Virginia Stallings Hampton

Our beloved mother, sister, friend and grandmother, Virginia Stallings Hampton passed away on Friday, April 25, 2008, in Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City, at the age of 80 of a stroke.

She was born Oct. 22, 1927, in Woodward, to Harry Coburn Stallings Sr. and Ruby Berry Stallings. Virginia graduated from Ward Belmont High School and Central State College that is now the University of Central Oklahoma. She was married to Earl Joe Hampton in Oklahoma City for 42 years. He passed away Sept. 10, 1993.

Virginia was a dedicated kindergarten teacher until she retired. She belonged to many organizations such as the National Society of Daughters of the American Colonists, Daughters of the American Revolution, United States Daughters of 1812, The Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia, National Society of New England Women, National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century, National Society of Magna Carta Dames and Barons, National Society of Daughters of Colonial Wars and P.E.O. She was very patriotic and loved her country and her heritage.

Her family background was steeped in genealogy. She loved reading, especially detective, western and mystery books. She was a gifted quilter, having won many awards and ribbons for her beautiful quilt work. She loved to entertain and enjoyed her many associations and the relationships she developed. She contributed her time and talents to many charitable and non-profit organizations. She loved her family and adored her cousins who were her friends all of her life. Virginia was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various church positions during her life.

Virginia is survived by six children, David (Diane) Hampton of Ripley, Virginia (Chuck) Slaton of Perry, Debra Hampton of Salt Lake City, Utah, Pamela (Ken) Lohse of Seattle, Thomas (Sherri) Hampton of Bakersfield, Calif. and Lisa Hampton Alverez of Wichita Falls, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, John H. Stallings, Fairborn, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. We are consoled by the knowledge that she and Joe are together again.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Harry Coburn Stallings Jr. and her grandson, Harrison Edward Hampton Simonton.

Heartfelt thanks to the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff of Mercy Hospital for the compassionate care given in her final days.

A viewing was held Monday in Hahn-Cook Street and Draper Funeral Home, 6006 N.W. Grand Blvd., Oklahoma City. Funeral services were today at 10 a.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 33rd and Bryant, Edmond. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery, 13400 N. Kelly, Oklahoma City.
