• Stillwater Children’s Museum looks both ways during celebration

Susan Brinker - NewsPress

The Stillwater Children’s Museum’s recognized volunteers and celebrated its sixth “birthday” recently.

More than 100 museum supporters and friends gathered to mark the museum’s progress and future on March 27. Featured speakers were Jim Halligan, president emeritus of Oklahoma State University, and his wife, Ann, who encouraged attendees to continue volunteering and supporting the museum.

Cindy Schaefer was presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award for 2007. She began volunteering for the SCM in August 2006 and has contributed talent and skills in the development of the museum’s Web site and the creation of the museum’s digital and print newsletters.

“It’s exciting to be a part of bringing such an important facility to our community,” said Schaefer.

The SCM relies on volunteers for everything from building traveling exhibits to raising financial support to build the museum’s permanent location.

This event, the first of its kind for the museum, was held to show the community how much these volunteers are appreciated.

Carrie, Sean, Lucie and Tyler Mahoney were recognized as a family team for the 2006 Volunteer of the Year Award.

They began volunteering with the museum in the fall of 2005 and continue to be actively involved. They assist with building and maintaining hands-on traveling exhibits and have been instrumental in planning and building the museum’s parade floats for the past three years’ OSU Homecoming parades.

The 2007 “Community Vision Award” was presented to Gerald Bradshaw and Sara Ray for their continued support and dedication to the SCM.

Certificates of appreciation were given to Mark Gunkel and Dr. Laura Wilhelm to recognize their volunteer service above and beyond the call of duty. Gunkel donates his professional services as a CPA and Wilhelm has been integral to the development of Museum Without Walls programming.

For information about the SCM or to make a donation or volunteer, call (405) 533-3333 or visit www.stillwaterchildrensmuseum.org.
